How many feet of gutter do I need?

  • Gable roof: gutters run along the two eaves — usually the house's two long sides (2 × length).
  • Hip roof: water drains to all four sides, so gutters run the full perimeter.
  • Downspouts: one for every 30–40 ft of gutter and at least one at the end of each run; length ≈ 10 ft per story.
  • Measure the eaves themselves if the house has wings, garages or porches — every roof edge that sheds water needs a gutter.

FAQ

Are seamless gutters worth it?

Usually. Seamless aluminum is formed on site in one piece per run, so there are no joints to leak, and it costs only a little more than sectional vinyl once installed.

5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

5" K-style handles most homes. Choose 6" for large or steep roofs, heavy-rain areas, or long runs feeding one downspout.

Do gutter guards pay off?

Under trees, often yes — they cut cleaning from twice a year to an occasional rinse. Without overhanging trees, they rarely save their $7–$15 per foot.
