What's included in an installed price
- Removing the existing grass and 3–4" of soil.
- Weed barrier and a compacted base of crushed rock or decomposed granite.
- Laying, seaming and nailing the turf (rolls are 15 ft wide, so plan seams).
- Infill — silica sand, or antimicrobial/cooling infill for pets and hot climates.
Labor and base prep are about half the price, which is why DIY can cut the cost in half — and why bad prep is the most common cause of lumps, puddles and seams that show.
FAQ
Is artificial turf cheaper than sod over time?
Sod costs far less up front ($1–$2 per sq ft installed) but needs water, mowing and fertilizer. In dry climates with water restrictions, turf often breaks even in 7–10 years.
How long does artificial turf last?
About 10–20 years depending on quality, UV exposure and traffic.
Is artificial turf good for dogs?
Yes, with a pet-specific turf (perforated or fully permeable backing) and antimicrobial infill, plus an occasional rinse and enzyme cleaner.
